Can We Protect Ourselves from Radiation After an Atomic Bomb?

Medical professional examining radiation effects after an atomic bomb blast.

There is no single “miracle drug” that completely neutralizes or cures all the effects of radiation emitted by atomic bombs or high-dose nuclear explosions.

However, medical science is not helpless. There are certain medical treatments used to mitigate damage or accelerate the expulsion of specific radioactive substances from the body, depending on the type, dose, and effects of radiation on the body. These drugs do not “destroy” radiation but help the body cope with the damage received or protect specific organs.

Main Medical Methods Used in Acute Radiation Syndrome

The primary medical methods used in radiation poisoning (Acute Radiation Syndrome) are:

  1. Potassium Iodide (KI pills): This is the most common drug that comes to mind when radiation is mentioned. However, it has only one function: to protect the thyroid gland. It prevents the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine (I-131) released during nuclear explosions, thereby reducing the risk of thyroid cancer. It does not protect the rest of the body from other radioactive substances or direct external radiation burns.
  2. Prussian Blue: This substance, also known as a dye, prevents particles like radioactive cesium and thallium from mixing into the bloodstream from the intestines. By binding to these substances, it ensures their faster expulsion from the body via feces.
  3. DTPA (Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid): It binds to heavy radioactive metals such as Plutonium, americium, and curium, helping these substances to be excreted from the body via urine through the kidneys.
  4. White Blood Cell Stimulants (Growth Factors): High-dose radiation destroys bone marrow. This halts white blood cell production and leaves an individual completely defenseless against even the slightest infection. Drugs like Neupogen or Leukine stimulate bone marrow to try and rebuild the immune system and prevent fatal infections.

Why is Complete Salvation Not Possible?

If you are near the center of a massive explosion like an atomic bomb and are exposed to very high-dose instantaneous radiation (Gamma and Neutron rays), the DNA of your cells is directly and irreparably fragmented. Cells become unable to divide. Specifically, the gastrointestinal lining, which needs to regenerate very quickly, collapses, and the central nervous system is severely damaged. No drug capable of reversing this level of cellular destruction is available with current technology. Drugs and medical interventions are only used to increase a patient’s chances of survival in cases of low and moderate dose radiation exposure.

However, if you are at a long distance from the epicenter of an atomic bomb, the situation changes completely. In fact, the medical treatments and drugs I just mentioned (especially iodine pills) are specifically designed to protect people at a distance.

When you are far from the epicenter, you escape the searing heat, destructive shockwave, and instantaneous direct (gamma/neutron) radiation of the initial blast. But this time, a stealthy enemy emerges: Nuclear Fallout.

What is Nuclear Fallout and How Do Medications Work Here?

During the explosion, vaporized soil, building, and debris particles combine with radioactive substances and rise into the atmosphere. This radioactive ash and dust cloud is carried tens or even hundreds of kilometers away by winds, slowly raining down on the earth.

The primary risk at a long distance is not radiation directly passing through walls like an X-ray and hitting you, but rather inhaling, ingesting (via food/water), or having these wind-borne radioactive dusts come into contact with your skin.

Protection and Treatment Methods at a Distance

In this scenario, the following protection and treatment methods come into play:

  1. Potassium Iodide (KI) Pills Are Now Essential: The fallout cloud contains large amounts of radioactive iodine. When news is received that the wind is bringing this dangerous cloud towards you, these pills are taken as advised by authorities. Thanks to the pill, your thyroid gland becomes saturated with stable iodine and refuses to absorb radioactive iodine from the air, rain, or water.
  2. Prussian Blue Saves Lives: Let’s say you live at a long distance and accidentally consumed agricultural products grown in your region or contaminated water after fallout. Prussian Blue medications prevent radioactive cesium or thallium that has entered your stomach from entering the bloodstream and ensures their rapid expulsion from the body via the digestive system.
  3. Sheltering Indoors (Best Protection): At a long distance, no drug can replace a solid wall. The energy of radioactive fallout decreases very rapidly over time (the first 48 hours are critical). Taping up air vents, door gaps, and windows, and waiting in the innermost part of the building (preferably the basement) until radiation levels drop is the most vital step.
  4. Mechanical Decontamination: If you were caught in fallout outdoors at a long distance, immediately upon entering your home, removing your clothes and placing them in a plastic bag removes 90% of the radioactive dust on you. Afterward, washing with plenty of lukewarm water and soap without irritating the skin stops radiation absorption through the skin and external radiation burns.

In summary: If you are at a very long distance, there is no immediate risk of death. Medications are not for stopping the fragmentation of your cells, but they work perfectly to prevent toxic radioactive dust carried by the wind from accumulating in your body (especially in your internal organs).
