The Curious Case of Buttons: Why Men’s and Women’s Shirts Differ

Ever noticed how the buttons on men’s and women’s shirts are on opposite sides? It’s not just a fashion quirk, but a fascinating relic of social history! For men, buttons are traditionally on the right. This likely stems from a time when most men dressed themselves and were right-handed. Having the buttonholes on the left and buttons on the right made it easier for a right-handed person to button up their own garment. For women, however, buttons are typically on the left. The prevailing theory suggests this dates back to wealthier women who often had servants to help them dress. For a right-handed maid facing her mistress, buttons on the mistress’s left (the maid’s right) would have been the most convenient to fasten. Even though most people dress themselves today, these buttoning conventions have persisted, a subtle echo of a bygone era stitched into our everyday clothing.
